On the Edge – Part 6 – the purposeful control of your Information.

April 25, 2016 Leave a comment

When the internet was launched and Social Media was born I immediately thought here is a way for everyone to be equal, for all to be heard, but mainly for everyone point of view to have a forum.

It promised the free flow of information … the availability of different perspectives!

Social Media, like Facebook, Google+, Twitter and others for instance become a self affirming bubble of our beliefs … which instead of the wonderful optimism at the beginning seems to have the opposite effect .. which widens the gap between different and sometimes opposing points of view .. basically because the views we receive ar not balanced, we do not hear the other side perspective taken into account …. at least this was the good part of Old media from once credible broadcasters .. Mass Media … you all got the same information, albeit through the sometime political perspectives of the provider … then we interpreted that information through our beliefs.

Politics and the Internet – once the internet was a place where one could achieve clarity – now we are back to the wild west as Trolls, Government surveillance operating and participating within social media for goodness knows what reason .. but knowing Government agencies and their machiavellian thought processes .. it can’t be good,

We have news in its various forms around since the beginning, from the Town Cryers of old England to the printing press …. but in a way there was always someone determining what news we would have access to … in Old Media … which includes newspapers, magazines, Film, Politicians … someone, usually the editor made the assessment then for the whole community, society of country … this is News and this is not. This was usually a person.

Current mass media still continues the editing role, deciding what news is relevant … (I mean sensational .. that brings ratings) and therefore money … I have spoken about the ownership and advertising impact of the neutrality of media previously.

The difference between serious responsible journalism and infotainment … is that every mean, stupid, vicious act now gets a light shone on it … is that why we think the world is a darker place?

The media has become a vehicle for manipulation, vested interests, propaganda as well as religious extremism and terrorism, as what Terrorists seek is exposure … to push their own ideology … a terrorist act without sensational publicity has little impact of making people afraid.

All religions and purveyors of ideologies have used the name of God to inflict maximum harm against innocent people to promote their own political ideals – the media just focuses us … sensationalises it … remember the occasion where the media walked through a alleged terrorists house .. before the Police arrived is total irresponsibility and would have harmed the hunt for clues irrevocably … but the media was after a story … they are after the ratings, the exposure .. the acclaim … money …that is the problem

There are many negatives of algorithmic tailored news #NotBalancedNews

On the Edge of the Abyss – Part 5 – Media

Media

This society is all about the surface of life, appealing to your desires, the quick fix .. too few of us look beneath the dogma and beliefs to find what is real.

The greatest tool for the continuation of this paradigm, well any paradigm is the media of the time … depending on the government … State, Corporate, or other – when the state and corporate merge as is the case now, freedom is truly under threat. We are in effect in a Theocracy where the word of a spiritual guide has been replaced with the word of the one percent … pursuing their agenda of control and consumption.

In society, beliefs that originate through dogma are tools for social conditioning and compliance, rather than any personal expressions of an inner realisation or an universal truth, at time in our lives comes when we can transcend this, when we no longer see that the system serves the common good, or any good, then old dogmas that are fully investigated and seen that to have no foundation … at this point they can become springboard for spiritual growth, when we strip away the layers of beliefs and dogmas to arrive at what is reality to us. For our individual reality is a convergence of many things, a compilation of beliefs, values, childhood and life experiences all create how we see and relate to what is an essentially neutral world.

When we are brought into this world we are like a blank slate … nature has by and large finished her work, then for the rest of our life it is our attitudes, values and beliefs which determine our choices, using these tools, we create our lives.

The lessons we receive whilst we are growing up and how we are nurtured and created lay the foundation for who we become.

Projecting our beliefs (by in many cases by denial, disbelief or skeptical behaviours), is a way which I would suggest the majority of us handle the world, learnt from our environment whilst growing up – for instance, the erroneous belief that there is only one right way to live, is at the root of all conflict in the world ~ Government agendas and their war machines are the single greatest factor that determines the future of the world, and the greatest cause of suffering in the world.

What initially determines our belief system is the family or nurturing environment as well as the society we live in … made up of individuals, families, communities, groups, and onwards.

A very prevalent problem in Australia is abuse within families, where their partners, physically, emotionally and verbally abuse spouses and children! This is perpetrated normally by men. It is a symptom of this, of belief systems (and the expectations that society and family places on the individual) and sometimes the abuser was abused as a child .. a cycle of violence.

The external pressures that are placed on people to “keep up with the Jones” to maintain the perception that they are successful that they are living the dream, in other words the availability or not of money… this paradigm has found a fix for that as well .. debt .. as we have found with the gross injustices that are affecting the Greek people… the oppression of Greece as been brought about by money .. debt .. In a personal environment, this debt cycle is brought about due to the easy availability of money, where the borrower “needs” to consume or purchase an product or service – we pay for money not only in money but also in our liberty.

Why would I go over old ground? Simply because in this day and age the largest purveyor and distributor of doctrine, or ideology, to establish and maintain this belief system is the media … the legacy world mass media, that shapes our beliefs and to what this society values … a fading representation of this is the desire to achieve … any country is sustained by the foundation of any society that rests on its laws, its enforcement (police & judicial) and its money.

To over identify with a belief an ideology or a religion is to act unconsciously, for then we prioritise the outcome rather than the integrity of the process. This happens in every ideology … at some point the ideology and its survival to deliver its outcome becomes the only measure, individuals within the system carry out the protocols of the ideology as good soldiers for the prospect of their own advancement within a self destructing bubble, their expedience will have no bounds.

All ideologies follow this path.

MEDIA

Defined as – All means of mass information and communication.

We would normally define Old Mass Media as the following –

(1) Broadcast media (radio, recorded music, film and television)

(2) Print media use a physical object such as a newspapers, magazine, books, pamphlet or comics

(3) Outdoor media are a form of mass media that comprises billboards, signs, or placards placed inside and outside of commercial buildings, sports stadiums, shops, and buses-Billboards (signs in tow of airplanes), blimps, skywriting, AR (Augmented Reality) Advertising. Public speaking and event organising can also be considered forms of mass media, tough sometimes to a niche market.

The essential difference between Mass / Old media and Social Media is a paradigm shift. It’s the difference between a passive and an engaged relationship.

Books themselves were one of the first forms of mass media, before Gutenberg in the 15th Century, a book in various forms have been with us for approximately 5,000 years.

Nowadays, blogs and other distribution means such as RSS feeds, can also be considered as mass media.

I think we can judge Old Mass Media, or legacy media as a passive media, for there is generally no way of the viewer to question, engage with the content being offered. Social Media on the other hand is interactive and then the consumer of the media can offer their own opinion and sometimes insight into the media platform itself …

All areas of mass media have undergone rapid consolidation over the years, now we are at a point where ownership of the majority of media assets in concentrated in the hands of a very few … although very few media organisation are truly independent, most have an agenda, liberal or otherwise, some of which are designed to be truly divisive, even fascist .. all have a place in a free society, however when the majority of the organisations are funded through the advertising dollar, there is huge grounds for corruption … by selected news that appeals to the ownership of the media outlet because of an ownership agenda, a rating decision or to appease an advertiser – truth is sacrificed like all that is of honour to the altar of money and influence, or in the worst sense raw power.

It is in this way that censorship has become very apparent .. where in this case, news is selected rather than reported, where in the case of the editors of News Corp’s newspapers all have an epiphany on the same day and striking similar opinions are expressed … in the current scenario in the USA, reporting on Bernie Sanders is not being reported in main stream media.

Commercial Media

Commercial Media wants inter-personal conflict …. because they want you to take sides … this is why there are so many Television shows that force you to take sides … reality shows that see up stressful situations that lead to conflict, in a way it seems to be the replacement for the the Gladiatorial events of old … this is only a surface view of the appeal to us .. all this to re-enforce the paradigm

Brings the lowest common denominator .. as media in all shapes races for the bottom … to look for controversy, to promote controversy .. and as often as they can to create it, peddle it .. why? Because it brings audiences … then ratings .. then money .. then?

Remembering Commercial media wants conflict and controversy .. for it brings ratings, one wonders are they covering Trump because he is a serious candidate or because he never fails to create news by offending someone, thereby creating division not collaboration, Trump’s mindset is not that of a leader but of an ego.

And like so many ideologies that have existed before—whether fascist or communist—many people, especially young people, are being drawn to it.

Events in Iraq are continuing to act as motivation and a focus of a range of terrorist related activity in the UK even though it is proven that ISIS was created by MI6 and the CIA … like Al Qaeda before them …. if you want the reason why Osama Bin Ladin was assassinated and not brought to trial, it was probably because he knew too much … he could never be put on the witness stand.

I believe the mess countries are in and hence the state of the world is in a large part due to dis-information, manipulation or censorship of truths and of course corporate influence over the content – that investment in controversy instead of policies, instead of truth is why we cannot heal …. they prefer content that is aggressive (fear) to manipulate the majority, the masses … people are so oppressed they have no empathy for anyone outside of themselves – they fear and blame minorities are other countries because they are told to – also due to the unrealistic fantasies that Media purports … that money has value (it only does because we are told it does, and therefore we believe it does) … that opportunity is just around the corner … this sets up expectations that are generally never met, Media are accountable for this, the purveyors of propaganda .. the frontline soldiers in this world wide strategy to divide and control humanity.

All actions have consequences, as countries, organisations and certainly individually we are not immune – those who do not think this are in line for a huge wakeup call.

Media – Future

Subscription Television and Online services, such as Netflix and others offers a disruptive opportunity … for this brings the opportunity for Netflix and others to be accountable only to their income stream, their subscribers, this should release them from the undue influence and manipulation of their content by advertisers …

more to come ..

This is still very much a work in progress … subject to addition and change .. any constructive thoughts would be welcome

Content vs Technology

April 8, 2013 Leave a comment

Whilst it is true in some aspects, we have come a long way from the original books of my school days … but I am wondering if our focus is on what really is of value, at the end of the day … the internet, all devices whether they be notebooks, tablets or Smart phones are a tool, a portal … a doorway only … these devices are not what should be valued … for in the case of education they just facilitate the access to what is really can be of value … the content… and of course there is much discussion as to what is the right content … Chomsky comments; The Purpose of Education – Is it creative or an Indoctrination (political, ideological ) a You Tube discussion is available here http://youtu.be/DdNAUJWJN08 … For me I feel it is an effort to produce cogs in a wheel with little thought given outside the strict guidelines of the chosen career path … for who they are as a person … those that do think outside the box are incredibly rare … and we find men and women in their 40’s … choosing a different life .. or perhaps the essence here is a different way of living life.

Teaching is a huge responsibility, and the actual pressures of teaching whilst at the same time being pressured for many sides concerning productivity … budgets – it is so clear that teaching is not what it used to be – so far as the huge amount and the breath of content there is to teach, is I am sure is part of the problem .. when I started with an Classical Arts education which talked about Art, History and the inherent transfer of values, principles and ethics, (before we decided on our career paths) admittedly it was a different world, however in the formative years of a child’s education I wonder if the intense focus on learning business or career applicable skills is the right course of action …. for things like true ethical behaviour cannot be taught in a classroom –  it is something that is integrated into your personality over time from your primary caretakers … such values and principles must be part of the person themselves … my view is that on-going education just educates us in how to learn to prepare for the work force … unfortunately too many of the graduates I have employed are too focused on theory and have little or no ability to understand the human cost of their decisions …. there is little or no empathy for the people and the lives they live (away from work) and the responsibilities that necessarily come with it … so we have huge numbers of people who just fall through the cracks .. with little or no safety net … this goes further as Lewis Carroll might have said, down the rabbit hole … into another discussion all together, outside the scope of this post.

I am not a teacher … but my observation would be is I wonder if the focus is going away from the content we are teaching the next generation … to focus on the technology that delivers the content … it like focusing on making a book, rather than the content it delivers … we could go deep into this (perhaps I will on one of my blogs) – the philosophy of the internet … however my view is that we need to focus on the content, and more face to face collaboration, although in an Online  Teaching Environment that may not be easy, but there are ways of fostering such a circumstance … otherwise we will end up with a generation, essentially of loners … whose world is the internet … and the fantasy world it represents … and hence  have no interest or ability to interface with fellow members of humanity – what kind of society that creates can’t be sustainable.

If we want to positively change the future of humanity away from the senseless pursuit of more, we need to start by changing that which our children are taught to value … if they learn to value technology over people and the content itself, that is like having the cart before the horse … would it not be preferable to foster a collaborative and creative culture, perhaps we need to start by really engaging and communicating with each other, rather than talking at each other –  after the essence of the internet is supposed to be social, and interactive, therefore engagement is a pre-requisite for a relationship .. we are no longer in the passive media days of Mass media … we should look at this further I feel.  To me we seem to be without thought, running full speed into a abyss, just because everyone else is.

Engagement & Content ..

April 30, 2011 Leave a comment

Content of an interesting discussion …. starts the thought processes !

My thoughts at the moment, seem to be focused on “engagement”, the reasons why we aren’t and the bigger picture of flawed corporate cultures caused by basic systemic issues …  as I said in the feed yesterday “Everyone is connected, but are we really connecting ?” – I think not .. or worse if we are … we are not listening.  I have some views on the reasons for this … but it amazes me that organisations including governments seem to just go through the motions and are seemingly indifferent to the reality .. which is why their stakeholders .. us .. are not engaged (normally) with their strategies … this comes down to the education of the “masses” as well, as for the Gods in the marble halls – we are just too ‘aware’ for their own good.

However with the fragmentation of the mass market in all areas, including mass media, the outcome for me is that instead of organisations making systemic changes to move with the social and technological changes to improve their internal cultures and thus the engagement and transparency with “us”, they basically keep going the way they are going, and one day when the financial world is sorting through the carcass of what were “great” organisations (including governments probably) …  they will ask .. too late .. “How did this happen” ?

To cut a long story short, there has to be change in the way things are done … we all need to realise that so far as the Universe is concerned we don’t amount to a hill of beans as individuals (but together ?? ) … as Carl Sagan said in his own meditation … we are just this little blue dot in a relatively small galaxy, within the infinity of the Universe, that’s the reality of our significance … numberless blades of grass or the grains of sands on every beach … in every world springs to mind …

So what can potentially makes us different .. one thing, which is “what if”  we believed in engagement with each other, in true transparency (not just the words) we can become magnificent working together .. so what exactly is stopping us .. fear of “everything”, ego .. perhaps !

But we need to start, with one small step, how about within your own circle of influence, and then the circle will grow, and soon (this relies on engagement) .. we have the ability to foresee the magnificence which can be a social engaged one world …  utopia, even possible ?? … it must be possible as I can see our potential …probable .. I hope so .. I hope I see the start of it before my time is over .. well this time around anyway.

There needs to be one thing,  a world wide social revolution, that holds Governments at all levels accountable and likewise all levels of business … how about we bring all levels of abuse and inequity to the surface …. without all of the hype and b/s of the news organisations who are basically there to sell their own product, their content… so we come back basically to transparency and accountability … so long as there is a “rating” to be improved .. we cannot trust in the ethics of the organisation, who are only motivated by money .. for me (now) money is like the mythical pot of gold at the end of the rainbow .. when you get to it, there is nothing there … and I can tell you from personal experience that money and materialism does not make you happy  … but I guess that is something you need to find out for yourself.

By the way, if I hear one more time, “We have always done it this way … “ but this is my point exactly … and here you are talking with some organisation that is in need of change, sometimes surgical change. In any  organisation, you must be proactive and always be curious and strive for excellence. To drive policy … that is the function, or it is supposed to be of the Board / owner and the CEO .. to work on the question .. here is the direction we we want to go, how do we get there ? Too many CEO’s work in the company and therefore never understand the reality which is that their company is not entitled to anything .. they may have the best / greatest most exciting wiz bang product or idea in the Universe, but unless you really engage with your market, (before – you take it to market, so they are part of the process) – it will rarely succeed.

Ok .. time for my exercise …
